Top 10 Natural Home Ways to Get Rid of Moths From Your Wardrobe
Moths can be a huge problem, especially if you have a lot of clothes. They can eat through your clothes, and they can be very difficult to get rid of. In this blog post, we will discuss 10 natural ways to get rid of moths using using only natural methods - No chemicals here!
Red cedar oil is a famous natural moth repellent that has been shown to be very effective at getting rid of moths. We will also discuss how to get rid of moths using traps and repellents - all poison free and without having to go on a moth-killing spree. With these methods, the little buggers will simply keep away from your home and you will be able to keep your conscience clear. These tips are meant for both Carpet Moths (the Common Clothes Moth) and Pantry Moths.
Step One: Get hold of Red Cedar Oil
Purchase red cedar oil from your local health store or if you want to make sure it's pure and naturally sourced from 100% Juniperus Virgiana and safe for childrens and pets you can purchase our own red cedar oil from Swedish Red Cedar.
Step Two: Apply the Red Cedar Oil
If you are using Swedish Red Cedar Oil with a spray cap, spray the oil around the clothes (not immediately on the clothes, cedar oil is very strong). If you are using red cedar hangers, simply put the hanger in your closet. Cedar oil gives off a fresh smell that will also keep your clothes smelling great.
Step Three: Reapply the Red Cedar Oil
After a few weeks, you will need to reapply the red cedar oil. This is because the oil will evaporate over time.
Step Four: Make or buy a Moth Trap
If you want to get rid of moths for good, we recommend setting up a moth trap. You can either buy one of our Premium Pheromone Sticky Moth Trap or make your own.
To make your own moth trap, you will need:
- A container
- Some red wine
- A piece of fruit
- A funnel
To set up the moth trap, simply pour a little red wine into the container and add a piece of fruit. The red wine will attract the moths and the piece of fruit will provide them with food. Then, place a funnel over the top of the container so that the moths can get in, but not out.
Step Five: Repellents
If you don't want to use red cedar oil or traps, there are a few other things that you can do to keep moths away. You can try using moth repellents. Our Red Cedar Oil is proven to be the most effective, but if you have a lot of essential oils at home you can also make your own. There are a few different recipes that you can use, but we will just share one with you here.
To make a moth repellent, you will need:
- A jar
- 250ml of water
- 30 drops of lavender oil
- 30 drops of eucalyptus oil
- 30 drops of lemon oil
Simply mix all of the ingredients together in a jar and then place it in your closet or wherever you are having a moth problem. The essential oils will repel the moths and keep them away from your clothes.
Step six: Clean Your Closet
One of the best ways to prevent moths is to keep your closet clean. Moths are attracted to dirt and grime, so if you keep your closet clean they will have nothing to eat and they will stay away. Vacuum your closet regularly and wipe down any surfaces with a damp cloth.
Step seven: Use airtight containers
You should also consider storing your clothes in airtight containers when you're not wearing them. This will protect them from moths and other pests. You can purchase airtight containers from most stores or you can even use vacuum-sealed bags.
Step eight: Keep your house clean
Another way to prevent moths is to keep your entire house clean. Like I mentioned before - dirt and grime equals moth attractant. If you keep your home clean, they'll have nowhere to run.
Sweep and mop your floors regularly, vacuum your carpets and furniture, and dust all surfaces. Don't forget to clean those hard-to-reach places too - like the tops of cabinets and ceiling fans.

Step nine: Keep food sealed up
One of the main reasons that moths are attracted to homes is because of food. They are attracted to the smell of food, so if you keep your food sealed up they will have nothing to eat and they will stay away.
Store all dry goods, such as cereal, pasta, rice, flour, etc. in airtight containers or resealable bags. And make sure to keep your pantry door closed so that they can't smell the food from outside.
Step ten: Inspect your clothing and moldy food regularly
The best way to prevent moths from damaging your clothing is to inspect it regularly. Look for any holes or damage and make sure to repair or replace any items that are damaged. You should also wash your clothes regularly - at least once a month.
Moths are also attracted to moldy food, so make sure to inspect your food regularly and throw away anything that is moldy. Don't let moths ruin your clothes or your food - follow these steps and you'll be moth-free in no time.
