Fun Facts About Moths: Learn More About These Strange Creatures

Moths are some of the most interesting creatures on the planet. Did you know that they can survive in some of the harshest environments? Or that their larvae can thrive in your clothing for up to 30 months? In this blog post, we will discuss some more weird facts about moths. Keep reading to learn more!

They outnumber butterflies by 10 to 1

Moths and butterflies belongs to the same order called Lepidoptera but moths actually make up for 90% of the species in this group. Scientist have discovered over 135,000 different species of moths but some estimate that there could be up to 500,000. Did you know that moths can be found on every continent except Antarctica? Thats pretty fascinating and shows how many different environments they can thrive in.

They play an important role in nature

Moths are not always damaging pests, many moths are actually important pollinators and play an important role in many ecosystems. While butterflies get most of the attention, many moths move pollen from flower to flower. We don't really think about them as playing an important role in nature, perhaps because most moths are nocturnal animals and we don't watch them work during nigh time. But with this in mind, it may be worth considering whether you really need to kill the moths if you can use means that only keep them away. There are products such as these that are completely natural and free from chemicals like Red Cedar Oil for example.

They can cause problems

However, we cannot hide the fact that species like the Common Clothes Moth damage clothes and can pose a problem in our homes. Clothes moths do the worst damage in the larvae stage which they can remain in for about 30 months, or 2 1/2 years before turning into a cocoon. That is plenty of time to do some real damage and you won't notice them being there. A tip is to prevent the moths from entering your closets and wardrobes in the first place, by repelling them using means like Red Cedar Oil as mentioned above.

They're not that smart

Let's finish off with maybe the stupidest fact about these little creatures. You're probably aware of the fact that moths are attracted to light, which is why you often see them flying around lamps and streetlights. However, this attraction can also be their downfall. Since moths are drawn to light, they sometimes fly into flames and get burned. Poor little things...
